A glimmer of hope?

2/25/2015

One of my favorite health docs is the gentleman behind this initiative. Through research and practice, he knows: Fully 80% of all chronic disease and associated premature death around the world is preventable with uncontroversial knowledge we already have.

When it comes to good health, he has a who's who as his council of directors. I'm also pleased to let you know that these directors have given many incredible presentations. Many are available here.

YouTube for Kids ... and everyone else

2/24/2015

Google just announced the app YouTube for Kids. Check it out here.

I'm a YouTube fanatic. I do believe by 2020, traditional cable TV will be on life-support. One big reason is YouTube. There's too much content to compete with. Oh yeah, and it's free.

Here's what YouTube has done for me:

1. With thousands of outstanding presentations by diet and health experts, I learned how to lose weight and maintain a healthy lifestyle. I even wrote a simple book about it.
2. Most of my music comes from YouTube - live recorded concerts. And, with a simple utility, I download them permanently to my phone.
3. I do believe the smartphone is the greatest learning device ever invented. And since it's always within reach,  it's easy to learn anywhere ... airport, car, oh yeah, toilet. So, choose a subject and listen/watch experts discuss the topic of your choosing.
4. YouTube has diverse content. Stuff you never see on TV.

Here's my guess ... Google will go way beyond the kid's channel. Stay tuned for more amazing channels. Bring it on YouTube ...

Tell me a story

2/21/2015

I firmly believe that everyone has a story to tell. Unfortunately, most people never tell it. As I was looking for gems, I came across Elli's site: Leave a Story. Elli is a graphic artist from Sweden. The concept of her site: You write a short story and she designs the cover graphics. Mine is below.

Elli does this for free. It's her way of practicing graphic design. I wrote my story and 40-days later, she came up with this ... Check out her site and graphics. They're pretty cool.

Thanks Elli ... I love the graphic!

Neil Young's PonoPlayer: The Emperor Has No Clothes

2/21/2015

Neil Young has been promoting his Pono Music Player for a while. Now, it's available. Young states that other digital players only deliver 5% of the audio quality. So, he developed Pono. This music player is intended to give a much superior listening experience.

There's only one problem: Upon testing his player, it's difficult to tell the difference between Pono and your smart phone. You can read about it here.

What can Seinfeld episodes teach us about economics?

2/19/2015

Evidently a lot. These college professors have put together over 100 Seinfeld episodes and matched them with economic theory. Hey, that's a pretty creative way to explain the "dismal science".

Enjoy the Seinfeld clips and learn some economic theory at ... yadayadayadaecon.com.

The sad comedy of nutrition advice

2/18/2015

I was listening to the new guidelines about cholesterol consumption. I believe the host, Diane Rehm, and the guests were trying to simplify the guidelines. However, all they did was make the simple concept of leading a healthy lifestyle confusing.

What to eat is about as divisive a topic as: climate change, vaccines, and politics. However, it's pretty easy to eat in a healthful manner. I addressed that topic about 2 1/2 years ago at my diet/health site.

Running out of space in your Gmail account?

2/17/2015

I just used my 15-gigabytes of free storage. No problem: Run this great utility. It finds email that has large attachments. If you don't need the file attachment anymore, just delete the email. No doubt, you have many emails with large attachments.

A shot at cable TV ...

2/16/2015

Take Comedians in Cars Getting Coffee for a spin. If you've never watched Seinfeld's online only show, you are in for a pleasant surprise. This interview with Louis C.K. is my favorite, but there are many great ones ... Jon Stewart, Carl Reiner, and more. This is one example of thousands that demonstrate the slow death of cable TV.

Remember Marty Allen? He's 92 & as entertaining as ever.

2/15/2015

If you're of a  certain age, then you will remember Marty Allen. Until I listened to Marc Maron's podcast, I assumed he was no longer with us. No doubt, Marty Allen is alive an well. You'll be driving down memory lane when you listen to this interview. You'll hear names like Ed Sullivan, Dean Martin, Elvis, and many others.

By the way, you can download Marc Maron's app and listen on your phone.

WARNING ... Marc Maron loves using the F-word. So, if you have sensitive ears, don't tune in.

What is a Trust Engineer? Are you on Facebook? If yes, proceed.

2/11/2015

Hey, that photo looks like me. Okay, so I have no hair and I'm probably 35-years older than that young man. But, I've spent many hours online with that type of look in my eyes. This podcast is a fascinating look deep inside Facebook. Guaranteed you will view Facebook differently after listening to this fascinating discussion.

What technologies are yoots using today?

2/10/2015

Related to technology, I frequently quote Bob Dylan: "Times they are a changin'." Recently, I read that this company Yik Yak received funding of $74-million - a valuation of up to $400-million. I live in Atlanta and this is an Atlanta-based company. So, I decided to check out its website. Actually, it's an app.

What the heck does this have to do with today's yoots? Well, if you are a parent, you might want to be aware of the types of technologies the yoots are using. In a word, this app is ... disgusting.

So, if you happen to download the app, be aware: Frequently the language is vulgar and the conversations are inane. If interested, do a search. I won't link to it.

1,001 Rules for My Unborn Son

2/9/2015

Today's a special day for me. My third grandson was born. So, how about a few interesting rules. One suggestion was to listen to the Beach Boys song: When I Grow Up to Be a Man. You probably haven't listened to that in years. So, take a listen.

Here are hundreds of the rules.

Combine football and history and you have a winning story

2/5/2015

I'm a big fan of Robert Krulwich - a great storyteller. On NPR he has a show called Radiolab. This week's story is about the history of football. However, in Krulwich tradition, the story has a very unique angle. I always listen to podcasts on my phone, but since I cannot link to your phone, here's the site.

Carly, a lover of animals, features wonderful animals that most of us have never seen before. The creatures are fabulous and how 'bout this: Carly has almost 50,000 followers on Facebook, over 13,000 on Twitter, and a fantastic website.

Of course, I love Carly's tagline because ours is: Buried Treasures of the Web - amazing websites, apps, videos you'd never find on your own.

You can listen to the science behind this and there's also software that will automatically change the brightness of your screen. I've been using the software for over a week. I like the product, but I cannot confirm that I'm sleeping any better.
